As part of PAGE 2026 in Dubrovnik, Jannik Vollmer presented recent research by LYO-X and Roche on improving the delivery of medicines to the brain.
Improving Drug Delivery to the Brain
The blood–brain barrier makes it difficult for many medicines to reach the brain. Researchers studied how an antisense oligonucleotide spreads through the body after being injected into the fluid surrounding the spinal cord.
Using PET imaging and mathematical modelling, they found that the drug moved quickly along the spine, while uptake in the brain varied between individuals and became clearer over time.
These findings may help improve dosing strategies and support the development of more effective treatments for neurological diseases.
